According to Josep Borrell, the head of the EU’s foreign policy, foreign ministers on Tuesday urged Israel not to cut off “water, food, or electicity” to Gaza and called for humanitarian exit routes for anyone attempting to leave the region.
After emergency talks between the 27 ministers, Borrell also said that the “overwhelming majority” of EU states oppose suspending aid to the Palestinian Authority, after the shock Hamas attack on Israel.
According to top diplomat Josep Borrell, the EU ministers reiterated on the necessity for “respect of international and humanitarian law and it means no blockade of water, food, or electricity to the civil population in Gaza.” According to Borrell, Israel has the right to self-defense, but it must be carried out in accordance with both international and humanitarian law.
He also said the EU meeting called for “humanitarian corridors to facilitate people who have to escape the bombing of Gaza” across the border to Egypt.
After mixed signals from Brussels over the future of its financial support, Borrell said an “overwhelming majority” of EU states oppose suspending aid to the Palestinian Authority.
