Nuclear fuel handing, receiving ceremony for RNPP tomorrow

Tomorrow at the plant site, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) will hold its nucleofuel handing and receiving event (graduate ceremony), with virtual participation from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh.

According to an official source, the two leaders will participate in the handover of the Certificate and Model of Nuclear Fuel via virtual platforms.

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will attend the ceremony online, but Science and Technology Affairs Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman will be there in person.

Alexei Likhachev, director general of ROSATOM in the Russian Federation, will also be in attendance at the Rooppur location.

Md Ali Hossain, the secretary for science and technology, and Dr. Shawkat Akbar, the project director for the building of the RNPP, will also be there.

The science and technology secretary told BSS that all was ready to hold the historic Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) graduation ceremony and give over the certificate and model of nuclear fuel.

“We are ready for holding the programme successfully. Guests will join the event from four points and deliver speeches,” he said.

In terms of uranium giving and receiving ceremonies, Bangladesh will be the 33rd nuclear power-using nation in the globe as a result of the government’s commitment to ensuring the nation’s energy security.

On September 28, a special flight brought the first shipment of radioactive fuel for the RNPP to this location.

The government intends to commission the first RNPP unit in September 2024 and the second in the middle of 2025, according the project specifications.

The project is being worked on by 30,000 individuals, including 7,000 professionals. It is anticipated that the project will run for 60 to 80 years.

Sources said Rooppur nuclear power plant will be able to take Bangladesh to unique heights by entering the nuclear club as it will also be able to play a leading role in meeting carbon emission reduction targets.
