On Saturday morning, a whale struck a boat off the coast of eastern Australia, killing one man and wounding another.
Around 6 am local time (2000 GMT), the boat carrying the two guys was struck and overturned in the waters off La Perouse, which is located 14 km (9 miles) southeast of Sydney.
The first man was found unresponsive in the water and passed away immediately. The second patient was attended to by paramedics and is currently being treated in a hospital.
Water Police acting superintendent Siobhan Munro described the incident as “a tragic accident” in remarks obtained by national broadcaster ABC.
According to her, the whale breached close to or possibly right onto the little “run-about” boat.
“Right now there are lots of whales out there and there are lots of examples of whales breaching next to boats,” she added.
It comes less than two weeks after a four-metre humpback whale was struck in the head by a boat propeller off the coast of Western Australia.
