South Korea’s heat wave death toll rises to 23

The death toll from this summer’s heat wave in South Korea has risen to at least 23, according to Yonhap news agency, citing fire authorities.

Two more heatstroke deaths were confirmed on Tuesday, bringing the projected death toll to 23, more than three times the seven deaths recorded in the same period last year.

The majority of those killed were elderly farmers laboring outside in the scorching heat.

The heat wave was most severe in the southeastern North Gyeongsang province, when 10 people died from heatstroke.

South Korea has lately experienced a severe heat wave, with daytime highs in several regions of the country hovering above 35 degrees Celsius.
