Kyiv mayor says Russian drone attack targets Ukraine capital

According to Kyiv’s mayor, a Russian drone attack on the capital overnight caused damage in various areas.

“As a result of the enemy attack on the capital and the fall of (unmanned aerial vehicle) wreckage, a non-residential building was damaged in the Solomyansky district,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

Kyiv’s busy Solomyansky district hosts an international airport.

“There was a tree fire in Svyatoshynsky district,” Klitschko said, adding that no one was killed or wounded in the attack.

At before 3:00 a.m. (0000 GMT), an AFP correspondent in Kyiv heard at least three explosions.

According to the Kyiv municipal military administration, “parts of a drone fell on the playground” and a fire broke out in a non-residential building in the Golosiivsky district, and emergency services were on the scene.

The administration had already issued a drone alert and advised locals to seek shelter.

The southern Odesa region was also targeted by a drone assault on Wednesday, according to the regional military administration on Telegram.

The strikes come a day after Russia claimed to have shot down a wave of Ukrainian drones aimed towards Moscow, Crimea, and Black Sea boats. For the second time in two days, a tower in Moscow’s business sector has been struck.

Russia announced on Monday that it would increase its strikes on Ukrainian military equipment in retaliation to drone attacks across its territory that it blamed on Kiev.

Russia conducted a nocturnal drone attack on Kyiv last week, shooting down all inbound drones.
