On Saturday night, an airstrike struck a residential area of the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, inflicting injuries on 20 people and critically illing three children, according to officials.
President Volodymyr Zelensky attributed the strike to Russia and claimed that additional persons were still trapped in the rubble.
Recent weeks have seen an increase in both Russian incursions into the other direction as well as airstrikes over Ukraine.
Since February 2022, when Russia invaded, Kyiv has been claiming that it is getting ready for a big offensive against Moscow’s occupying forces in an effort to regain territory.
Saturday’s strike affected two residential buildings, the president said.
“The Russians attacked the city,” Zelensky posted on Facebook on Saturday.
“They hit between two two-story residential buildings. Unfortunately, there are people under the rubble.”
Video posted by Zelensky showed rescue workers searching the destroyed building, to the sound of industrial drills.
“Five children were wounded by the enemy in Pidhorodnenska community,” said Serhiy Lysak, governor of Dnipropetrovsk region.
“The condition of the three boys is now assessed by doctors as serious. They are in operating rooms.”
“The total number of injured increased to 20. Of these, 17 are hospitalised,” he added.
“Under the rubble of a mangled house, rescuers continue to search for people. There is probably a child there.”
Two persons were also killed by Ukrainian shelling on Saturday in Belgorod, Russia, a border region that has been repeatedly attacked this week, according to the local governor.
Seven people have died this week as a result of the extraordinary bombardment that has pounded the border communities of Belgorod.
