According to organizers, more than 600,000 tickets have been sold for the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, signaling strong interest in a number of sold-out marquee matches.
The world championship begins on Sunday with the preliminary round before the major guns get involved on October 22. There are seven host cities in Australia.
The Sydney Cricket Ground will be packed for Australia’s inaugural match against New Zealand as the reigning champions, a rematch of last year’s championship match.
The following night’s India-Pakistan match is also sold out, with over 90,000 spectators expected to pack the Melbourne Cricket Ground after additional standing-room only tickets were snatched up in less than 10 minutes.
There aren’t many seats left for the first game of the tournament, which will see Sri Lanka against Namibia before UAE takes on the Netherlands at the 36,000-seat Kardinia Park Stadium in Geelong.
“We’re delighted that we’re set to see big crowds for both the opening match of the event in Geelong this Sunday and the first weekend of the Super 12 stage in a week’s time,” said ICC T20 World Cup chief Michelle Enright.
“It’s going to be fantastic to see full stadiums for cricket in October.”
