Israeli president in Germany to commemorate Munich Olympics massacre

During his three-day stay, Israeli President Isaac Herzog will participate in commemorations marking the 50th anniversary of the Munich Olympics massacre in 1972, which resulted in the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes at the hands of Palestinian terrorists.

Initially refusing to attend in protest at Germany’s handling of the atrocity and its aftermath, the relatives of the victims will now be present for the memorial services on Monday in the Munich region.

After Germany and the grieving families reached a settlement on compensation on Wednesday, they decided to go.

On Tuesday, Herzog will deliver a speech in the Bundestag of Germany and travel to Bergen-Belsen, a former concentration camp where thousands of Jews were held captive under the Nazi regime. Numerous people perished from illness, malnutrition, and abuse.

The British soldiers that freed the camp in April 1945 included Herzog’s father, Chaim Herzog, who subsequently rose to become the head of state of Israel.
