UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed Bangladeshi soldiers’ contributions to UN missions and expressed optimism that the country will continue to contribute more troops to meet the UN’s future needs in this area.
According to a message received here today, when UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Bangladesh Foreign Minister, Dr. AK Abdul Momen, at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, he praised the role of Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen recommended that the Secretary-General appoint more Bangladeshi nationals to high-level UN peacekeeping roles, as well as SRSG (Special Representative of the Secretary-General) positions in other UN political missions across the world.
The foreign minister briefed the Secretary-General on the current status of Myanmar’s forcibly displaced citizens and requested UN assistance in repatriating all Rohingyas to Myanmar.
Guterres praised Bangladesh’s generosity in hosting 1.1 million Rohingyas and reaffirmed the UN’s support for their return to Myanmar, where they were forcibly displaced.
Guterres praised Bangladesh’s amazing socio-economic development under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visionary leadership and expressed confidence that Bangladesh will continue to achieve further victories in the coming years, notably in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
