UK envoy calls on state minister, discusses sports and youth collaboration

Today, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque received a courtesy call from British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke at his secretariat office to discuss bilateral collaboration in youth development and sports.

Enhancing young talents, raising the bar for women’s sports in Bangladesh, and bolstering sports diplomacy between the two nations were the main objectives of the bilateral summit.

The State Minister greeted the High Commissioner and stated that sports diplomacy has the potential to improve bilateral ties.

He noted that the government is placing strong emphasis on sports development under the dynamic leadership of the Prime Minister. He also highlighted the recently launched ‘Notun Kuri Sports’ programme, aimed at identifying grassroots talent among boys and girls aged 12 to 14, who will receive advanced training at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan.

The minister described sports as a useful instrument for lowering social disparity and stated that the administration is dedicated to bringing about constructive social change through youth development and sports.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of technical help in developing a robust sports sector and conveyed optimism for UK support in improving coaches’ and players’ abilities to match global standards.

During the meeting, High Commissioner Sarah Cooke assured full support from the United Kingdom in developing women’s sports in Bangladesh. She emphasized prospects for cooperation in events like the Commonwealth Games and stated that the UK is eager to take an active role in this field.

She also mentioned that both countries can work together in disciplines like swimming, boxing and martial arts, and emphasized support for the Paralympic Games to ensure inclusivity at all levels of society, further strengthening friendly ties between the two countries.
