Bernie Sanders made a surprise appearance at Coachella music festival on Saturday night, appearing onstage as crowds sprinted over, camera phones in hand, to capture the US senator’s political plea.
“I’m not gonna be long but this country faces some very difficult challenges and the future of what happens to America depends on your generation. You can turn away and ignore what goes on but you do it at your own peril. We need you to stand up to fight for justice,” he said to raucous cheers.
Sanders’ “Fighting Oligarchy” demonstration with Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez earlier in the day reportedly garnered 36,000 attendees, according to organizers.
During his remarks, Sanders welcomed pop singer Clairo to the stage and congratulated her for speaking out against the conflict in Gaza and for using her platform to defend women’s rights.
At Coachella, a significant double weekend in the California desert that unofficially kicks off the music festival season, he called on attendees to rebel against the present White House, health insurance companies, and billionaires.
“You can turn away and you can ignore what goes on but if you do that, you do it at your own peril. We need you to stand up, to fight for justice. To fight for economic justice, social justice, and racial justice,” he said.
“I love Bernie Sanders!” screamed one festival-goer as Sanders concluded his speech and brought Clairo to the stage.
