‘We are mentally prepared for the election’: NCP convener Nahid

Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NPC), declared today that his party is “mentally prepared” for the upcoming national parliament elections.

“I never said elections would not be possible by December, rather I said elections cannot be held under the current vulnerable condition of the police,” Nahid gave clarification about his interview with Reuters, at a press conference at the Jatiya Nagorik Committee office in the capital.

Nahid said, “We have talked about the Constituent Assembly and national elections. But it is not just about the election; we want to see visible judicial actions first. We want to see the implementation of the  July uprising declaration in the shortest possible time.”

Regarding his interview with news agency Reuters, Nahid also said there were some misquotes in the Reuters interview. “I said financial support for the party primarily comes from the affluent members of society and well-wishers.”

“Some media outlets have spread incorrect information about this,” he added, adding that the party is heading toward an offline and online crowd-funding drive to raise election cash and build up offices.

“The current police administration lacks experience in holding free and fair elections,” said NCP convener Nahid, underscoring the significance of maintaining security and stability before to the election. It has been a while since their capabilities were put to the test. Prior to the elections, the state of law and order must be addressed.

Nahid also expressed concern over the increase in rape and eve-teasing cases as well as other forms of violence against women across the nation. The NCP called on the interim government to protect women in public places and vehemently denounced the acts.

“We call on the interim government to ensure the safety of women in public spaces. The government must take strict measures so that  perpetrators involved in violence against women are brought to justice,”  he added.

The NCP is presently striving to meet the requirements for its registration as a political body, the party’s convener told the media.

Akhtar Hossain, the secretary general of the NCP, declared that all parties participating in the July–August rebellion would be invited to an iftar party on March 10 at Suhrawardy Udyan. People will be invited from all throughout the nation.

He noted that political parties, civil society, and notable figures from a range of industries will gather for an iftar party on Tuesday.

Senior Joint Convener Samanta Shermeen, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, NCP Chief Organizer (South region) Sarjis Alam Chief Organizer (North Region) Hasnat Abdullah, were also present at the press conference.
