Australia PM says Trump considering steel tariff exemption

Following a meeting with President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Tuesday that the United States is considering exempting Australia from broad steel tariffs.

During a phone conversation with Trump, Albanese pushed to exempt Australia from the impending 25% steel and aluminum taxes.

“On tariffs we discussed Australia’s position when it comes to tariffs, particularly with regard to steel and aluminium,” Albanese told reporters after the call.

“The US President agreed that an exemption was under consideration in the interests of both of our countries.”

Trump’s tariffs indicate that, in spite of China’s and Europe’s warnings, he is intensifying his long-promised trade war.

Australia is a major supplier of iron ore, a crucial raw material for the alloy, although it is a small player in the world’s steel export markets.

Australia would be among the first nations to receive a carve out if Trump agreed to provide the exemption.
