Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, has advocated for making peacekeeping operations more ecologically friendly in order to better connect with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Goals.
In order to support the work of Agenda 2030, he said, it was debated how to make peacekeeping deployments more ecologically friendly, implement creative strategies, preserve the biodiversity of the host nations, and train peacekeepers.
According to a UN statement received here today, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury made these comments during a briefing on the contributions of Bangladesh’s peacekeepers in the field.
The Bangladesh delegation to the UN, along with the missions of Germany, Italy, the Republic of Korea, and Slovenia, co-hosted a side event titled “Environmental Impact of UN Peace Operations – from Ambition to Action” on January 31, 2025, at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The session, which was facilitated by Slovenia’s Permanent Representative, sought to increase awareness, talk about how UN peace operations have reduced their environmental impact, and look into potential shifts to renewable energy sources.
The ceremony was attended by Mr. Atul Khare, the Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, as well as other representatives from member states.
