Despite a boycott by the opposition, Chad is holding local, provincial, and legislative elections on Sunday as it begins a political transition following three years of military administration.
The roughly eight million registered voters will be able to cast their ballots between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. (0500 and 1700 GMT), with the assistance of 100 foreign observers and officials from various political parties.
On Saturday, soldiers, police officers, and nomadic people started casting their ballots.
Following the death of his father in 2021, Itno was first led into power by the military.
Before his son took over, Idriss Deby Itno, the elder, had imposed strict rules on the Sahel nation for thirty years.
The younger Itno became victorious in a contentious presidential election in May. These polls are being presented by his government as a step toward the adoption of democratic governance.
Opposition leader Succes Masra criticized the process, alleging fraud and urging a boycott. “It is better to stay at home,” Masra said in a Facebook live on Saturday
