Nicaragua breaks off ties with Israel

In response to the Gaza War, Nicaragua declared on Friday that it will be severing ties with Israel, branding the Israeli government as “fascist and genocidal.”

Vice President Rosario Murillo, who is also President Daniel Ortega’s wife, said that the left-wing president, who has been harshly critical of Israel’s year-long conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, ordered the severing of ties over Israel’s attacks on Palestinian areas.

With practically no relations between Israel and the Central American nation, the move is primarily symbolic.

Israel does not have an ambassador in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.

Prior to this, Nicaragua severed its connections with Israel twice: during Ortega’s leadership in 2010 and again in 1982, when the Sandinista revolutionary government took power after the nation’s 1979 revolution.
