Microsoft expands its AI empire abroad

The tech giant most closely linked to artificial intelligence, Microsoft, has recently disclosed investments in AI overseas totaling close to $10 billion. This represents the price Microsoft is ready to pay to maintain its leadership position in this important field.

The rapid success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT propelled generative AI as the newest technological revolution in Silicon Valley, propelling Microsoft—OpenAI’s principal sponsor—to the top of the global valuation rankings.

Since then, the creator of Windows and its competitor Google have been engaged in a fierce rivalry, releasing tools that, in response to a straightforward inquiry, generate text, graphics, or lines of code.

Amazon and Meta have done the same, introducing AI helpers and models that are getting more and more complex.

The gambles have so far paid off; Microsoft reported excellent results on Thursday as well, which the corporation credits to realizing the promise of artificial intelligence.

The hype surrounding generative AI as a new industrial revolution “has taken on so much value, they can’t afford to lose,” according to EMARKETER analyst Jeremy Goldman.

These major businesses “have a war chest, and they feel they have to spend this money on AI, otherwise they’ll no longer have the warchest,” he stated.
