Thailand rolls out red carpet as Bangladesh PM arrives

At the request of her Thai counterpart Srettha Thavisin, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Bangkok this afternoon on a six-day official visit to Thailand. A red carpet was stretched out to greet her warmly.

The Thai Prime Minister’s Office Minister Puangpet Chunlaiad welcomed the premier upon her arrival at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok at 01:08 PM local time.

At the airport, she received a 19-round gun-salute and a guard of honor.

The premier of Bangladesh had earlier departed Dhaka at 10:13 a.m. (BD time) on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines jet to complete the six-day journey, which involved both bilateral and multilateral visits.

The prime minister of Bangladesh will visit the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for its 80th session from April 24-29. She will also have bilateral talks with Prime Minister Thavisin during her visit.

In addition to signing many cooperation agreements, Bangladesh and Thailand will also sign a letter of intent to begin free trade agreement negotiations.

Bangladesh and Thailand are likely to sign an agreement on visa exemption for official passport holders, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation while two more MoUs on tourism sector cooperation and duty related mutual cooperation to expand the relations, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud told a media briefing on Monday.

On April 26, Bangladesh Prime Minister will be formally received by her Thai counterpart Srettha Thavisin while a ceremonial guard of honor will be accorded to her.

On the same day, the Bangladesh premier will hold bilateral talks with PM Thavisin at the Government House (Prime Minister’s Office) following a tete-a-tete between the two leaders, witness the signing of the documents, participate in a joint press conference and then attend a state lunch to be hosted by her Thai counterpart in her honour there.

The prime minister will meet with the King and Queen of the Kingdom of Thailand, Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshan and Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, at the Palace during the visit.

Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the 80th Session of ESCAP and give a speech on April 25 as part of her global involvement.

The prime minister will receive a visit from Armida Salsiah Alisjabana, the Executive Secretary of ESCAP and the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the same day.

On April 29, the premier is anticipated to come home.
