Mexican mayoral candidate stabbed to death

According to officials, a mayoral candidate in northeastern Mexico was assassinated on Friday while gathering with supporters; this was a part of a wave of political violence preceding the June elections.

Irving Barrios, the attorney general of the violent state of Tamaulipas, reportedly announced the start of a manhunt for the assailant who stabbed Noe Ramos.

According to state security spokesman Jorge Cuellar, Ramos passed away from his wounds on Milenio television.

The center-right candidate was allegedly accosted by a man brandishing a knife while he was meeting with Mante residents on the streets, according to the local media.

Bloodshed related to drug smuggling and corruption frequently befalls Mexican politicians, especially in the run-up to elections.

Since last June, almost thirty persons who were running for office in Mexico have been killed, according to research firm Laboratorio Electoral.

Among them was an aspirant mayor of one of the riskiest cities in Mexico who was shot and killed on the street.

Early in April, while visiting supporters in the central city of Celaya, Gisela Gaytan was shot and killed.
