Historic Trump trial shifts to grilling of potential jurors

In the first-ever criminal trial of Donald Trump, prosecutors questioned potential jurors on Tuesday. This marked the beginning of a rigorous procedure when both sides would try to exclude jurors who have prejudices.

There has never been a criminal trial of a former US president, and defense and prosecution teams are under intense pressure to allow twelve jurors to render a verdict on a man who is vying to win the presidency again in November.

After a preliminary phase in which prospective jurors could opt out if they felt unable to be impartial, the prosecution began detailed questioning of an initial panel of 12, with Trump’s defense team to follow.

Due to the high standard of a criminal trial, a jury must vote unanimously to find Trump guilty of lying to conceal a humiliating extramarital affair with a porn star. He would be free if there was just one dissident voice.

Deep into the presidential campaign, the laborious procedure was predicted to take up to two weeks before arguments may even start.

Judge Juan Merchan has ordered the 77-year-old Trump to appear every day, and on Tuesday, the Republican arrived for the second day in a rage.

“I should be right now in Pennsylvania and Florida in many other states, North Carolina, Georgia campaigning,” Trump said, calling Merchan, “Trump-hating.”

On Tuesday, Biden was scheduled to promote his economic plans during a visit to Scranton, Pennsylvania, the town where he was born and raised. Scranton is a crucial swing state that Biden barely won in the 2020 election.
