Oil deposits in the Sylhet-10 gas well have been found

In the Haripur gas field, oil deposits have been found in the first level of Sylhet gas well no-10.

500–600 barrels per day will be produced by the reserves.

It is possible to find 200–300 billion cubic feet of gas after testing and reevaluation; this would be worth roughly Tk17,000 crore. The oil reserves were first estimated to be 8–10 million barrels at a cost of Tk56 per liter, or Tk7000 crore.

According to the state minister, there is currently a natural pressure of about 35 barrels of oil flow per hour accessible. Additional testing will determine the deposit’s total size.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid came up with the information at a press conference on Sunday.

The oil reserves could last 15 years.

State Minister Nasrul Hamid said that in total, four layers of reserve fuel have also been discovered.

The excavation at Well No 10 reached a depth of 2,576 metres, and after testing on Friday, the presence of oil was confirmed at the first layer, at a depth of 1,397-1,445 metres, he said. Its initial API gravity is 29.7.

He said: “35 barrels of oil will be extracted from there every hour. As such, it is possible to extract 500-600 barrels of oil per day.”

The oil extraction will generate around Tk8,500 crore.

Oil can be used for 15 to 20 years if production is maintained at a rate of 20 million cubic feet per year. However, it’s currently closed. After the test, it will be certain how much oil is kept there. He estimated that it will take four to five months to do all of the testing.

The Sylhet Gas Fields Authority announced at the end of the previous month that gas had been found in a new well in Haripur, Sylhet. Fourteen days following the announcement, oil was discovered there.

Concurrently, the state minister announced that the 2,576-meter-deep Sylhet-10 gas well has been fully excavated. Three layers revealed the presence of gas.

At a depth of around 2,540-2,575 metre, around 25 million cubic feet of gas was also discovered during a test, said the state minister. The pressure there stands at 3,500 PSI.

Gas reserves range from 43 to 100 billion cubic feet.

Another gas layer also is found at a depth of 2,460 to 2,475 metres from which 25 to 30 million cubic feet of gas will be extracted.

He did, however, affirm that gas was also discovered at a depth of 2,290 to 2,310 meters.

In the Bagher Road neighborhood of Alirgao Union of Gowainghat Upazila, close to the Tamabil-Jaflong highway in Sylhet, the Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) Company began drilling in this exploration well two months ago.

The well was previously formally opened on November 14 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It is known that the Haripur region produced oil in 1986. The well’s lifespan, however, was only five years.
