UN flags at half-mast for staff killed in Gaza

Monday saw half-mast flags at UN facilities throughout Asia as employees spent a minute of quiet in remembrance of coworkers slain in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The United Nations reported “a significant number of deaths and injuries” in strikes on a facility in Gaza the day before, and the blue and white flag was lowered at 9:30 am local time at offices in Bangkok, Tokyo, and Beijing.

Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 100 UNRWA staff have lost their lives in the Gaza Strip, the organization said on Friday.

Israel has been bombing targets across the Gaza Strip since Hamas fighters carried out a deadly attack on southern Israeli communities on October 7.

According to Israeli sources, some 240 individuals were taken hostage and about 1,200 people, largely civilians, were killed in the Hamas attacks.

The health ministry in Gaza, which is managed by Hamas, reports that Israel has carried out retaliatory strikes that have killed over 11,000 Palestinians, the most of them civilians.
