France orders Apple iPhone 12 sales halted over radiation

Tuesday saw French regulators ordering Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 because it emits too much EM radiation and to fix older models.

The model generates more electromagnetic waves than is allowed, according to testing, according to the French radio frequency regulatory organization, the ANFR.

The ANFR claimed that it had “ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 12 from the French market as of September 12 due to the model exceeding the limit” for electromagnetic absorption by the human body.

According to the report, authorized labs revealed that during tests imitating when the phone was being held in the hand or placed in a pocket, the body absorbed electromagnetic energy at a rate of 5.74 watts per kilogram.

The European standard is a specific absorption rate of 4.0 watts per kilogram in such tests.

“Concerning phones already sold, Apple must in the briefest of delays take corrective measures to bring the affected phones into compliance,” said the ANFR in a statement on its website.

“Otherwise, Apple will have to recall them.”

ANFR noted that tests that measure the electromagnetic radiation absorbed at a distance of five centimetres was in compliance with the limit of 2.0 watts per kilogram.

Beginning on Wednesday, ANFR’s agents would confirm that the iPhone 12 models were no longer being sold in France.

Apple stated in a statement after being approached by AFP that it is in compliance with exposure restrictions and would keep working with the French authority to prove it.

To prevent harmful health impacts, regulators in a number of nations have set restrictions on the electromagnetic radiation that mobile phones may emit.

According to the World Health Organization, “no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use” after a significant number of research.
