Korea to help capacity building for universal pension scheme

In order to strengthen capacity-building for the effective management of the national pension scheme introduced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to bring the populace under the pension coverage, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) today organized an orientation for five high-level officials from the Finance Division at the secretariat.

According to a news statement from KOICA, the five officials will participate in a comprehensive training program in South Korea from September 4 to September 12 in order to promote knowledge sharing, skill development, and the adoption of best practices.

The purpose of the training program is to give participants an understanding of South Korea’s sophisticated pension management techniques and administrative procedures, empowering them to promote beneficial reforms within their own systems.

The Korean National Pension Service, which manages $800 billion in assets and is the third-largest in the world, is outfitted with a cutting-edge technology for the secure and accurate management of the national pension.

Speaking at the event, KOICA’s deputy country director Kang, Hyun Suh said the organization was pleased to support Bangladesh’s efforts to become a “welfare state” with aspirations to become a middle-income nation.

She reaffirmed the hope that KOICA, through its CIAT (Capacity Improvement and Advancement for Tomorrow) program, wants to raise the standard of pension plan management in Bangladesh, ultimately benefiting its residents, by providing the officials with the required tools and information.

Since 1993, KOICA, a government aid organization of the Republic of Korea under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has carried out grant aid and technical cooperation from Korea to help Bangladesh’s socioeconomic growth.

Under the CIAT Program, KOICA annually offers invitational trainings and scholarships to Bangladeshi government employees so they can attend short courses and pursue PhD and Master’s degrees at prestigious Korean universities.
