Sri Lanka lifts import ban on buses, trucks

Crisis-hit On Tuesday, Sri Lanka allowed buses and trucks to enter the country once more after a more than three-year absence.

When the nation had a severe lack of foreign currency to pay for necessary imports in March 2020, President Ranil Wickremesinghe signed an order lifting the prohibition.

An import restriction on automobiles, motorbikes, and three-wheeled scooters will continue, according to officials, until Sri Lanka’s foreign exchange reserves increase even more.

The price of used cars has increased significantly as a result of the importation prohibition.

Following months of protests brought on by severe food and energy shortages, the South Asian country’s then-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa was forced to resign last year.

After winning a $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund in March, his successor Wickremesinghe has quadrupled taxes, drastically hiked energy costs, and cracked down on protesters in an effort to stabilize the economy.
