It is no longer a secret that Bangladesh Cricket, Because of his experience, influence, and success, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCB) wants Shakib Al Hasan to captain the ODI side.
The BCB president, Nazmul Hassan Papon, even stated that naming Shakib as captain is the easiest decision.
The BCB may do a U-turn by not revealing the captain’s name after the emergency meeting yesterday, but practically all of the directors present in the meeting made it clear that they want Shakib as the captain in ODI format, according to a BCB insider.
Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s names have also surfaced, although it is evident that entrusting them with such a high-profile event as the World Cup might backfire. Instead, the directors want them to be trained under Shakib’s tutelage before taking on the full-time role.
However, the decision to announce Shakib’s name is subject to various “ifs and buts.” Shakib himself suggested to the BCB a few years ago that the captaincy for different formats be split, and that there should be separate captains for white ball and red ball cricket because it is difficult for one person to lead all formats of cricket simultaneously in modern cricket.
Shakib has already led the side in two formats–T20 and Test cricket–so the debate is whether he should be named captain in all formats.
While voting for Shakib as captain, some directors mentioned this issue and emphasized the importance of discussing it thoroughly with him. However, all of the board directors asked the board president, Nazmul Hassan Papon, to speak with Shakib to fix the issue.
Despite the fact that Cricket Operations Chairman Jalal Younus stated that the board would only appoint a captain for the Asia Cup because every board is required to designate an Asia Cup side by August 12, the BCB does desire a long-term leader.
Shakib, 36, has run out of crickets and is dealing with other issues. He has recently been preoccupied with his business, social activities, and other commitments. His family also lives in the United States, therefore he must travel there on a regular basis to spend time with them. Shakib has missed key crucial matches in recent years due to his other commitments.
The decision to announce his name as ODI captain was not easy. In reality, the BCB president would talk with Shakib whether he wants to step down as ODI captain in any format. The board wants Shakib to step down as Test captain in order for Liton Das to skipper in this format.
Before meeting with Shakib, the board president will meet with head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, who arrived in Dhaka today.
Hathurusingha’s contribution is also thought to be critical in this scenario.
