First Angara carrier rocket expected at Vostochny spaceport this fall

According to Alexey Varochko, director general of the Khrunichev Center, the first Angara-A5 carrier rocket, designed for the Vostochny Cosmodrome, is still under production and will likely be delivered to the spaceport this fall.

“The construction of the first Angara-A5 carrier rocket for the Vostochny cosmodrome is continuing according to schedule. <…> Sending the product to the cosmodrome to prepare it for launch is planned for this fall,” Varochko said.

The timetable for flight testing the Angara-A5 heavy launch vehicle calls for a total of six launches, Varochko previously told TASS. The Angara-A5 heavy launch vehicles are scheduled to launch six times as part of the flight test program. Three launches were accomplished, one each in 2014, 2020, and 2021, according to Varochko.

Russian launch vehicles in the Angara family, which range in size from light to heavy, use environmentally benign fuel components. On July 9, 2014, the first Angara rocket (light variant) launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. A heavy Angara-A5 conducted its first test flight from Plesetsk on December 23, 2014.
