Bangladesh climbs three places on the SDG Index

In the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Index 2023, Bangladesh has risen three places to rank 101st out of 166 nations.

Bangladesh rose up 19 ranks from the SDG Index of 2017 when it ranked 120th out of 157 countries, placing the country 104th out of 163 countries last year.

However, Bangladesh is ranked ahead of Pakistan (128th) and India (112th) in South Asia by the Sustainable Development Report-2023.

The study was recently published after being created by teams of independent experts at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

The two SDGs that Bangladesh is on track to achieve or maintain are SDG4 (excellent education) and SDG12 (responsible consumption and production).

Six Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-Being, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure — are being significantly progressed toward by the nation, although there are still obstacles to overcome.

SDG5 (Gender Equality), SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG13 (Climate Action), and SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals) are all being significantly challenged by Bangladesh, which is in a state of stagnation.

The research, however, reveals that the nation is falling short of three goals: SDG16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), SDG15 (Life on Land), and SDG14 (Life Below Water).

According to the research, there is a lack of data that can be used to achieve SDG10 (Reduced Inequalities).

“We thank our honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the country’s gradual improvement in attaining the SDGs even amid the global pandemic covid-19,” said Md. Akhter Hossain, principal coordinator of SDG affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office, in a statement released today.

It has been possible due to her dynamic and prudent leadership, he said, adding that the Prime Minister has properly aligned the country’s own development agenda with the SDGs and ensured necessary budgets to implement those, making Bangladesh a role model for development in the international arena.

“We want to achieve success in the SDGs like the MDGs under the proper direction of the honorable Prime Minister and the concerted efforts of all stakeholders,” Akhter Hossain said.
