Japan train stabbing leaves three people injured

On Sunday, a knife assault on a train in western Japan injured three people. According to police, they have detained a guy for reportedly carrying out the stabbings.

Tetsuya Sakagami from a local fire department told AFP that the casualties, a 20-year-old train conductor and two male passengers in their 20s and 70s, were brought to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.

According to local police, the 37-year-old male suspect was carrying three knives when he was apprehended at Rinku Town station in the Osaka area.

He was detained on suspicion of attempted murder and has already admitted to carrying out the assault on Sunday morning, according to the police, who also stated they were still looking into the attack’s motivation.

Japan has some of the strictest firearms prohibitions in the world, a low murder rate, and a low incidence of violent crime.

However, there are sporadic shootings and stabbings, like the murder of the former prime minister Shinzo Abe last year.

A 24-year-old man is accused of stabbing a passenger and setting a train in Tokyo on fire in 2021 while dressed as the Joker from comic books.

On July 31, a decision in that case is scheduled to be made.
