Russia’s Sberbank may open branch in Bangladesh

The largest lender in Russia, Sberbank, has been looking into the idea of offering banking services to customers who do business with Bangladeshi firms.

According to Reuters, which cites Bangladeshi media, Sberbank and the Bangladesh Bank have already held two rounds of discussions over the opening of a branch here.

“Sberbank is exploring all possibilities and formats for providing banking services at the request of Russian clients doing business with companies in Bangladesh,” Anatoly Popov, deputy chairman of Sberbank’s executive board said.

Sberbank, like many other Russian businesses, has been searching for new trading partners in Asia, where few nations have joined the Western sanctions against Moscow, according to the Reuters report. These sanctions were targeted at Sberbank shortly after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
