Bangladeshi players got reward for ‘declining’ IPL for national team

Shakib al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh’s men’s national cricket team, could participate in the final season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), since the two-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders purchased him in the auction. However, the famous all-rounder withdrew his name from the lucrative competition.

Liton Kumar Das, his Bangladesh teammate, could potentially play for the franchise, but the opener was with the national team during the IPL and could only play one match. Bangladeshi bowler Taskin Ahmed did not participate in the IPL in 2022 because he prioritized national duties.

President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Nazmul Hassan, has offered extra incentives for players who will play for the national squad instead of the overseas league. The incentives have already been distributed. BCB has compensated Shakib, Liton, and Taskin with around Taka 7 million for their absence from the IPL.

Shakib received the most money of the three, while the other two received nearly similar amounts.

By confirming the matter, BCB’s cricket operation chief Jalal Yunus told Prothom Alo, “They deserve it. It is not possible to give them the amount they would have got from IPL but the board is trying to honour them as they played for the country rather than in IPL.”

According to IPL rules, 20% of the cricketers’ pay go to their national cricket boards’ coffers. This time, BCB was denied the money since Shakib, Liton, and Taskin did not participate in the IPL; instead, they incentivized these three players.

In the most recent IPL, Kolkata paid 15 million rupees for Shakib, while Liton cost 5 million rupees. Goutam Gambhir, the coach of the Lucknow Super Giants, preferred Taskin as a replacement player. Taskin’s salary was not finalized because he did not attend the IPL. The quantity of BCB incentive was also set based on their IPL values.
