Rahul Gandhi gets bail in defamation case

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, was given bail on Monday by a Surat court in a defamation case stemming from his 2019 remark about the surname Modi.

According to a spokesperson, the sessions court will hear the case on April 13. The 52-year-old Congress politician and her sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra traveled to Surat on a scheduled commercial flight in the afternoon and then went to the sessions court.

For a speech in which he connected Prime Minister Modi’s last name with two wanted businessmen, joking that the “thieves” had the same last name, he was found guilty by a lower court here and given a two-year prison term last month.

He had been given bail by the lower court for a 30-day period to challenge the decision. He lost his status as a Lok Sabha member the following day.
