Dutch investment sought in driving sustainability in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has requested Dutch funding in order to advance sustainability in the nation and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The request was made today during a meeting between a delegation from Bangladesh led by Mohammad Tofazzel Hossain Miah, principal secretary to the prime minister of Bangladesh, and Ren van Hell, director of inclusive growth at the Netherlands ministry of foreign affairs, and Karin Mssenlechner, director of the department for Asia and Oceania.

In the meeting, which also included Netherlands Ambassador to Bangladesh Anne van Leeuwen, the principal secretary was joined by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, Senior Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, former MCCI President Nihad Kabir, and Bangladesh Ambassador to the Netherlands M. Riaz Hamidullah.

At the conference in The Hague, Netherlands, were Wies van Leeuwen, Business Development Coordinator for India and Bangladesh at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Joost Oosthuizen, CEO of Invest International.

The delegation highlighted the possibilities for investment in sustainability in Bangladesh while updating Dutch government officials on Bangladesh’s progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Faruque Hassan, president of the BGMEA, spoke at the meeting and emphasized how Bangladesh’s garment industry has made significant progress toward going green and is currently leading the world with the greatest amount of green factories.

He encouraged the Dutch government to support the sector, particularly in terms of environmental sustainability, as demonstrated by energy efficiency, recycling, and circular fashion.

In order to hasten the industry’s transition to sustainability, he also welcomed Dutch investment.

Furthermore, Faruque urged the Dutch government to continue working with leading Dutch fashion universities and institutes to help students at the BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) advance their knowledge and skills in textile, apparel, fashion, design, and business.
