Maroof steps down as Pakistan women’s cricket skipper

Following a disastrous Twenty20 World Cup campaign last month, Bismah Maroof announced on Wednesday that she was resigning as captain of the Pakistan women’s cricket squad.

While in charge of Pakistan for six years, all-arounder Maroof was unable to advance his side past the group stage of the T20 World Cup in South Africa.

With only a relief victory over Ireland, Pakistan was unable to advance past the quarterfinals of the competition won by Australia due to losses to archrivals India, England, and the West Indies at the main event.

“I feel fortunate to have led an incredible and hardworking bunch of cricketers,” Maroof said in a statement released through the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“It has been one exciting ride, which has been full of highs and lows,” the 31-year-old added.

“I am looking forward to continuing to play as a player and playing my role for the team.”
