Amber Heard agrees to pay Johnny Depp USD 1m in defamation case

According to a statement made on Monday, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have resolved their contentious defamation lawsuit, with the actress agreeing to reimburse her ex-husband $1 million for alleged physical abuse.

Heard announced on Instagram that she was giving up her appeal against the jury’s decision to require her to pay up USD 10 million because she “just cannot go through” another trial.

“After a great deal of deliberation I have made a very difficult decision to settle the defamation case,” she said.

“I make this decision having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social media fodder,” the 36-year-old said.

After a lengthy six-week trial that was based on hotly contested charges of domestic abuse, a Virginia jury held Depp and Heard both guilty for defamation but sided more strongly with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor.

Depp received USD 10.35 million in damages from the verdict, and Heard received USD 2 million. On Monday, the 59-year-old Depp’s attorneys praised the agreement.
