Doreen Bogdan-Martin, elected as Secretary General of International Telecommunication Union

Doreen Bogdan-Martin of the United States has been chosen to serve as the next secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialized body for information and communication technologies. On January 1, 2023, Bogdan-Martin will take over as Secretary General. KD2JTX is her call sign as a radio amateur.

On September 29, 2022, the election took place during the Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) of the ITU in Bucharest, Romania. Bogdan-Martin received 139 of the 172 votes cast by Member State delegates to win the job.

“This is an exciting development for ITU,” said International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) President Tim Ellam, VE6SH. “…she will be the first female Secretary General and only the third to hold an amateur license. Doreen has an exciting agenda for ITU.”

The biography and vision of Bogdan-Martin, together with a statement from her, have all been made public by the US Department of State.

“She will make an outstanding ITU Secretary-General and one IARU will be proud to work with on behalf of the Amateur Services,” said Ellam.
