Fifteen dead in attack on Shiite shrine in Iran

According to official media, the Islamic State organization claimed responsibility for the attack on a significant Shiite Muslim shrine in southern Iran on Wednesday, which claimed at least 15 lives.

At least 19 people were wounded when an armed “terrorist” attacked the Shah Cheragh mausoleum during evening prayers in the city of Shiraz, state television said.

At least 13 people were killed and 40 wounded in an attack by three assailants, according to earlier reports.

The local judiciary chief told state television that there was only one terrorist involved in the attack.

The attacker “shot randomly at worshippers” who had gathered at the shrine, local governor Mohammad-Hadi Imanieh told the broadcaster.

A state news agency IRNA reported that a witness told them he “heard the cries of women” as evening prayers started, and that the “assailant entered the shrine and opened fire”.

The Iranian media has recently published graphic images and videos of bloodied bodies that were lying inside of a shrine. This has caused quite a stir among the public.

The picture of the boy on the stretcher and the woman holding the child with traces of blood on the ground were carried by IRNA.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack in which a woman and two children were killed, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.
