Fuel trucks enter Gaza as Israel crossing reopens

An AFP reporter at the crossing claimed that fuel tankers entered Gaza on Monday as a cease-fire between Israel and Islamic Jihad militants in the Palestinian territory, negotiated by Egypt, held.

The trucks arrived in southern Gaza from Israel via the Kerem Shalom commerce crossing, according to the AFP journalist, hours after a ceasefire agreement that put an end to three days of bloody fighting went into effect.

Following the beginning of a cease-fire at 11:30 p.m. (2030 GMT) Sunday to stop the deadliest violence in Gaza since an 11-day war last year ravaged the Palestinian coastal territory, essential supplies have begun to arrive.

According to the health ministry in Gaza, 44 people died in three days of fierce combat, including 15 children.

Both sides had reported no significant violations of the truce overnight, despite a flurry of strikes and rocket launches leading up to it.

On Monday, routes in the border region would progressively reopen, according to the Israeli military.
