Moscow charges Kiev with attacking a prison in east Ukraine

In eastern Ukraine, which is under rebel control, the Russian army on Friday accused Kiev forces of attacking a jail housing Ukrainian prisoners of war, claiming 40 people were killed and several others were injured.

The defense ministry reported in a statement that “Forty Ukrainian prisoners of war were murdered and 75 wounded,” adding that eight staff members of the detention facility in Olenivka in the separatist-controlled province of Donetsk were also hurt.

A prison in the town of Olenivka was struck by Ukrainian fire, according to Daniil Bezsonov, a spokesman for the rebels in the Donetsk region who are supported by Russia, killing at least 40 Ukrainian POWs and injuring another 75.

Following the hard battle for control of Mariupol, Ukraine’s Azov Sea port, the Ukrainian army were captured after hiding out for months within the enormous Azovstal steel factory.
