Kevin Mayer of France won the second gold medal in the decathlon

Kevin Mayer of France won the world decathlon title for the second time on Sunday thanks to Olympic winner Damian Warner’s withdrawal due to injury.

Mayer followed up on their last global title in 2017 in London with 8,816 points after 10 disciplines over two days.

Pierce Lepage of Canada won silver with 8,701 points, and Zach Ziemek of America won bronze (8,676).

On Saturday’s first day of competition, Mayer recorded times of 10.62 seconds in the 100 meters, 7.54 meters in the long jump, 14.98 meters in the shot put, 2.05 meters in the high jump, and 49.40 seconds in the 400 meters, the one-lap test in which Olympic champion Warner of Canada crashed and sustained injuries.

The French world record holder ran the 110-meter hurdles in 13.92 seconds on Sunday, managed a discus throw of 49.44 meters, cleared 5.40 meters in the pole vault, and nailed a javelin throw of 70.31 meters to give himself 8,145 points heading into the 1,500-meter race.

Mayer successfully completed the last competition, passing Lepage on the home stretch to secure a second global gold.
