BCB to sell BPL franchisees rights for 3 years

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will sell the franchise rights for the upcoming three years, which means the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 tournament, the most well-known domestic competition in the nation, would revert to the previous structure.

Following today’s Board of Directors meeting, BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon announced that the tender for the franchise rights for 2023–2025 will be floated within a week.

The BCB also set the dates for the BPL for the following three years, with the BPL for 2023 taking place from January through February 16, the BPL for 2024 from January 6-February 17, and the BPL for 2025 beginning on January 1st.

Nazmul Hassan Papon informed that they are willing to make the BPL a seven-team tournament in the next year and will also increase the number of the team if there is an opportunity.

Due to the Covid-19 scenario, the BPL for the previous two years was not conducted in a conventional manner. The BPL was only played in 2020–2021 with local players because Covid–19 caused havoc all throughout the world. To commemorate the 100th birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, the BCB sold the franchise rights for a single year this year.

Explaining the reasons for selling franchise rights for a long period of time, the BCB boss said, “Giving the team for a long period of time gives the franchisees time to fix their own plans. But that doesn’t mean that everything will be as before. Some changes may come. We will advertise everything clearly. The terms and conditions will be decided in a few days.

The BPL’s regular franchisees have been Dhaka Dynamites, Rangpur Riders, Khulna Tigers, and Comilla Victorians for some time. The final BPL special was played by Comilla Victorians, but nobody showed.

However, according to BCB President, the former franchisees will return and revitalize the BPL.
