Call for ensuring women-friendly and safe environment in public places in Barisal

In public spaces and on public transportation, sexual harassment and violence against women and girls has become an everyday occurrence. Existing laws and procedures are insufficient to prevent women and girls from being harassed in public areas.

To guarantee a more secure and comfortable atmosphere for women in public spaces, including online platforms, adequate, concerted, and integrated action is required.

These were the speakers at a Barisal exchange meeting on a women’s security campaign in public areas.

Youth, in partnership with the Center for Research and Information (CRI), the Youth Platform of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the National Human Rights Commission, will hold a press conference on Sunday, March 13 at 11 a.m. at the ICDA auditorium on Fakirbari Road in the city.

Articles 26.2 and 35 of Bangladesh’s Constitution, according to the keynote address, ensure equal rights and freedom of movement for women in all domains of state and public life. The promise of active participation of women in all types of national economic activities, including equal rights in the labor market and the workplace, has been reaffirmed in the National Women’s Development Policy 2011. Existing rules and procedures, however, appear to be insufficient to prevent harassment of women and girls in public areas.

According to the speakers, more emphasis should be placed on making the public gathering area and pathway safe for women. There is no other way to avoid violence and harassment against women than to raise public awareness. A lady must create an appropriate atmosphere in order to be safe and stroll effortlessly. The speakers emphasized the importance of a positive shift in young people’s perceptions, attitudes, and behavior, as well as those of citizens and stakeholders when it comes to women’s security.
