Apple receives six Academy Award nominations, including the first-ever Best Picture nomination for “CODA”

Apple made history today by receiving six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture for “CODA,” Best Actor for Denzel Washington in “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur in “CODA,” Best Adapted Screenplay for “CODA,” Best Cinematography for Bruno Delbonnel in “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and Best Production Design for Stefan Dechant in “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”

Denzel Washington has surpassed his own record of 10 total Oscar nominations with today’s nomination for “Macbeth: A Tragedy,” becoming one of the most nominated performers of all time and the most nominated Black man in history.

“CODA,” from Apple Original Films, is the first film with a predominantly Deaf cast in prominent roles to gain a Best Picture nomination, and Troy Kotsur is the first Deaf male actor to receive a nod for his outstanding performance in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Siân Heder, the writer/director of “CODA,” receives her first Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the announcement today, and the 94th Annual Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 27 in Los Angeles, CA.
