Former Bundesbank chief appointed to head IMF expert panel

Following charges of data tampering against IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF named former Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann to lead an independent expert group, the organization announced Friday.

Georgieva was embroiled in controversy last year after an inquiry found that she was among top World Bank officials who falsified data from the carefully regarded Doing Business report in favor of China during her employment there.

Georgieva has disputed the claims, and her position as executive director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was reaffirmed in October.

The expert panel will “perform an independent evaluation with the goal of determining how the Fund can ensure it has robust and effective avenues for complaint, disagreement, and accountability,” according to a statement from the IMF.

The statement continued, “This will involve examining the process for addressing complaints applicable to the Managing Director and Executive Board officials.”

By the end of March 2022, the group is anticipated to complete its report and provide recommendations to the Board of Directors.
