England beaten by Australia in first Ashes Test in Brisbane

On the fourth day of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba, England’s hopes were dashed by a thumping nine-wicket defeat by Australia.

Following their third-day comeback, England surrendered their last eight wickets for 77 runs in the morning session, including the key dismissals of Joe Root for 89 and Dawid Malan for 82, according to the BBC.

Nathan Lyon’s 400th Test wicket came in the form of Malan, who went on to take 4-91 as England were bowled out for 297.

Australia was left with only 20 points to chase, which they did shortly after lunch in the Brisbane sun, giving Pat Cummins his first Test victory.

The host team leads the five-match series 1-0 and maintains their 35-year unbeaten streak against England in Brisbane.

Since beating India in the first Test in February, England has lost 10 of their last 11 Tests in Australia and won only one of their last ten matches.

Root’s side has absolutely no margin for error in the final four Tests, with England having to win the series to reclaim the Ashes.

The second Test, a day-night match with a pink ball, begins on Thursday in Adelaide.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the fifth Test, which was initially set to take place in Perth, will now take place in Hobart, also as a day-night match.
