Iran urges ‘vigilance’ after drone attack on Iraqi PM

Iran condemned a drone strike on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi on Sunday, calling for “vigilance to foil plans aimed at the country’s security and development.”

Said Khatibzadeh, a spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, blamed the US for leading the 2003 war of Iraq, which deposed tyrant Saddam Hussein and set off years of sectarian conflict.

“Such incidents are in the interest of those who have violated the stability, security, independence and territorial integrity of Iraq over the past 18 years,” said Khatibzadeh.

“They have sought to achieve their sinister regional goals by creating terrorist groups that seek to cause sedition,” he added.

The drone strike, which was not immediately claimed, was the first to target Kadhemi’s home, who has been in charge since May 2020 and was unharmed.

It comes as political parties negotiate parliamentary alliances based on the early results of the October 10 legislative elections.
