UN chief repeats call for calm on Lebanon-Israel border

On Sunday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated his demand for peace along the Lebanon-Israel border.

In a message to correspondents, Guterres’ press office wrote, “The secretary-general expresses his great worry over the recent escalation between Lebanon and Israel across the Blue Line, including rocket fire into Israel and return airstrikes and artillery fire into Lebanon.”

The UN released the Blue Line in 2000 as a border demarcation between Lebanon and Israel.

According to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon’s press office, the secretary-general calls on all parties to exercise extreme caution and actively engage with the UN Interim Force’s liaison and coordination channels. “It is critical that all entities engaged avoid acts that could exacerbate tensions and lead to a mistake,” Guterres said on Friday.

One year after the devastating Beirut Port blast, Lebanon is struggling both politically and economically, prompting the new escalation.
