Israeli artillery shells Lebanon after rockets fired over border

Following rocket firing from Lebanon into Israel amid escalating regional tensions, the Israeli army claims it has fired artillery shells into Lebanon.

The army claimed in a statement on Wednesday that three rockets were fired into Israeli territory from Lebanon, one of which missed the border. “Artillery forces fired into Lebanese territory in retaliation.”

One missile burst in an open area, according to Israeli station Channel 12, and another was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defence system.

Several rockets were also fired at Israel, according to witnesses in Lebanon.

Four persons suffering from “stress symptoms” were treated by Israeli medics, who disseminated photographs of a brush fire. It was unclear whether Lebanon had suffered any casualties.

Several Israeli communities, including Kiryat Shmona on the Lebanese border, heard sirens warning of a rocket strike.

Civilians in northern Israel are not subject to any restrictions, according to the Israeli military.

Naftali Bennett, Israel’s prime minister, said he and defence minister Benny Gantz had been “briefed” on the situation and were directing the reaction.
