AstraZeneca vaccine as gift from Japan arrives Saturday

On Saturday, a batch of 245,200 doses of Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive in Dhaka as a gift from Japan. Through the worldwide program COVAX, Japan is supplying this vaccine to Bangladesh. This is the first time Japan has sent immunizations to Bangladesh as a gift.

Foreign Ministry officials announced on Friday afternoon that foreign minister AK Abdul Momen will receive the immunization on Saturday afternoon at Shahjalal International Airport. Ito Naoki, Japan’s ambassador to Bangladesh, will hand off the immunizations.

Toshimitsu Motegi, Japan’s foreign minister, said that Japan would donate 11 million (1 crore 10 lakh) AstraZeneca vaccinations to 15 countries through COVAX. Bangladesh will get 2.9 million (29 lakh) AstraZeneca vaccinations over the course of several phases.

The global program COVAX collects vaccines in two methods. To begin, several governments have committed to purchasing COVAX vaccines. Second, COVAX receives funding from a number of countries to procure vaccines. COVAX spends the money on vaccines that meet the organization’s needs.
