6.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Japan

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook the northwestern coast of Japan on Saturday. Authorities said no tsunami alert had been issued. Apart from this, no immediate damage was reported.

The quake affected Tokyo, the country’s capital, this morning, the AFP news agency reported. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake’s epicenter was 48km deep in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said no tsunami alert was issued for the quake. However, heavy tremors were felt in many parts of the west coast, even the city of Tokyo.

“We are still gathering information,” Tomoki Sawata, a local government spokesman, told AFP. So far, no casualties have been reported.
